Adolescents struggle with being heard and seen.
Relationships change over time, which can create anxiety for an adolescent. This anxiety leads to questions about their place in a relationship.
“Where do I fit into the picture? My friend group from last year has almost completely changed. Is there something wrong with me?”
Being heard and understood by peers and adults is essential but can lead to frustration.
“Why am I being ghosted? Did I do something? When I ask the adults in my life for help, they go into fixing mode. I wish someone would just listen to me.”
These are the questions Divya* asked in therapy.
Divya dealt with peer issues at school after a social media post went out about her. She didn’t want to worry the adults, so she tried to manage it alone. But when she started getting panic attacks on her way to school, she knew something needed to change.
In therapy, Divya found a nonjudgmental and empathetic space to explore the peer issues she faced at school. We discussed healthy relationships and boundary-setting to help her find ways to advocate for herself effectively.
We also discussed the importance of seeking help from trusted adults when the issues were too big for her to handle. She learned that everyone needs support sometimes and that every person has a different threshold for how much they can handle.
Divya is learning to recognize and manage anxiety before it paralyzes her. By tuning into herself and recognizing early signs of her emotional responses, she continues to learn about her triggers, strengths, and areas for growth.
Therapy was an eye-opener for Divya.
Divya is starting to understand her value and sees that once she recognizes her strengths, others begin to see them, too. Getting to know herself better has increased Divya’s confidence and strengthened her voice.
